Functional Description

IC3600SCBE1A is a Turbine Control Board developed by GE. It is a part of Mark I and II control system. It typically interfaces with other control boards and field devices to provide precise control inputs and outputs necessary for safe and optimized turbine operation. Its design reflects the rugged engineering standards of the time, ensuring durability, long service life, and high system availability.

Speed Control Loop

  • When the speed control is active and in command, the control system operates as a closed-loop feedback system. In this setup, the speed control output is fed into a set of minimum value gates, which determine the final control signal known as VCE (Valve Command Electric). This VCE signal is then used by the fuel control system to adjust the amount of fuel supplied to the turbine, ensuring the desired turbine speed is achieved.
  • The turbine’s actual speed is continuously monitored by speed pickups, which provide real-time feedback. This measured speed is compared to the desired speed, known as the speed command. If there is any difference between the actual and commanded speeds, the speed control system automatically adjusts the fuel flow accordingly—either increasing or decreasing it to minimize the error and bring the turbine speed to the commanded value.
  • In two-shaft turbine units, speed control is slightly more complex. Here:
    • The Low-Pressure (LP) turbine set is governed by its speed control loop, which manages the fuel flow to maintain the desired LP turbine speed.
    • The High-Pressure (HP) turbine speed loop, on the other hand, typically controls the second stage nozzle position rather than direct fuel flow. By adjusting the nozzle, it regulates the HP turbine’s performance and speed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is IC3600SCBE1A?
It is a Turbine Control Board developed by GE.

How does the speed control output affect turbine operation?
The speed control output passes through minimum value gates to produce the VCE (Valve Command Electric) signal. This VCE signal commands the fuel control system, regulating the amount of fuel sent to the turbine to achieve and maintain the set speed.

What role do speed pickups play in the loop?
Speed pickups measure the turbine’s actual speed. This measurement is fed back to the speed control system for comparison against the speed command, enabling accurate adjustments.
