Functional Description

IS200EBKPG1A is an Exciter Back Plane Board manufactured and designed by General Electric. It is a part of the EX2100 Series used in Excitation Control Systems. The Exciter Back Plane (EBKP) serves as an integral component within the control module, functioning as the backbone that supports and interconnects various control boards while managing I/O terminal board cables. Its design and structure are tailored to accommodate the seamless integration and functionality of critical components within the system.

Backplane Functionality

  • Backplane for Control Boards: The EBKP provides the necessary backplane for the control boards, enabling the seamless interconnection of these essential components within the system architecture.
  • I/O Terminal Board Connectors: It features connectors designated for I/O terminal board cables, ensuring efficient and organized connections, optimizing data transmission and control.
  • Sectional Division: The EBKP consists of three distinct sections allocated for controllers M1, M2, and C. Each section operates independently with its dedicated power supply, enhancing reliability and performance.
  • Controller Boards in Sections: Sections M1 and M2 house various control boards such as ACLA, DSPX, EISB, EMIO, and ESEL. Section C comprises DSPX, EISB, and EMIO boards, catering to specific functionalities and control requirements.
  • Rack Mounting and Cooling: Mounted within a rack holding the control boards, the EBKP is equipped with two cooling fans at the top, ensuring proper ventilation and temperature regulation to maintain optimal operating conditions.

Backplane Connectors and Components

  • Upper Part Connectors: The upper part of the backplane houses 24 DIN connectors, serving as essential components of the backplane infrastructure.
  • Lower Part Components: 27 D-SUB connectors, Three circular DIN connectors, Three 12-pin power supply plugs, Three fan power plugs, 30 Testpoints.
  • These components are pivotal for establishing connections between various boards, devices, and power supplies, contributing to the overall functionality and communication within the system.

Application Data

The EBKP board, while devoid of LEDs, fuses, or adjustable hardware, offers valuable diagnostic features through testpoints incorporated for signal analysis. These testpoints serve as access points to diagnostic analog-to-digital converters and digital-to-analog converters, aiding in signal evaluation and system diagnostics.

Terminal Board Connectors

  • EGPA Exciter Gate Pulse Amplifier Connector:
    • Six connectors are allocated for up to six EGPA boards, driven by the ESEL board.
    • Connectors J306, J307, J406, J407, J506, and J507 correspond to PCMs (bridges) 1 through 6, respectively.
    • The number of connectors driven is contingent on the ESEL board's group number.
  • ECTB Exciter Contact Terminal Board Connector:
    • ECTB serves as the interface between EMIO and customer relay contacts.
    • Connectors J405, J408, and J415 carry similar signals, facilitating relay contact interaction.
  • EXTB Exciter Terminal Board Connector:
    • EXTB acts as the interface between EMIO and pilot relays, referenced in the accompanying table.
    • Backplane connectors J505, J508, and J515 facilitate various signals for the pilot relays.
  • EPCT Exciter PT/CT Terminal Board Connector:
    • EPCT serves as the interface between EMIO and PTs (Potential Transformers) and CTs (Current Transformers).
    • Connectors J305, J308, and J315 facilitate similar signals for PTs and CTs.
  • EACF Exciter AC Feedback Board Connector:
    • EACF interfaces EMIO with air core CT and flux coil inputs.
    • Connectors J504, J509, and J514 carry similar signals for air core CT and flux coil inputs.

Power and Peripheral Connectors

  • Keypad Connector:
    • The keypad connector supports the cabinet door-mounted keypad for controllers M1, M2, and C.
    • 8-pin circular connectors at J303A, J310A, and J313A facilitate keypad support.
  • Tool Connector:
    • This connector enables RS-232C communication between an external computer and the DSPX board, routed through the EISB board.
    • 9-pin connectors at J303B, J310B, and J313B support external computer communication for controllers M1, M2, and C.
  • Power Connector:
    • Three power connectors, located at J602T, J610, and J612, supply power to all boards in M1, M2, and C, sourced from the EPSM power supplies in the exciter power backplane.
  • Fan Power:
    • Three 4-pin mini-mate-n-lock connectors at J502, J510, and J512 provide power to fans in sections M1, M2, and C, although only two fans are typically employed.
  • Testpoints:
    • Three groups of seven testpoints each are allocated for M1, M2, and C sections, serving diagnostic purposes.

Replacement Procedures

  • Ensure the exciter where the board is located has been powered down.
  • Open the door of the exciter control cabinet and perform electrical circuit tests to confirm the power is switched off before any interaction.
  • Ensure all cables are appropriately labeled with the correct connector names as indicated on the board to simplify the reconnection process.
  • Disconnect all cables from the lower section of the backplane, including fiber-optic cables from EISB, and the Ethernet cable from ACLA.
  • Remove all boards from the upper section of the backplane. Combine the ACLA with the filler plate for removal, and likewise, the DSPX and EISB boards are removed together.
  • Unscrew the rack mounting screws and slide the entire rack out of the cabinet.
  • Insert the replacement rack containing a new backplane, secure it in place with the mounting screws, and ensure they are properly tightened.
  • Reinstall all control boards in their designated slots and securely fasten the mounting screws.
  • Reconnect all cables to their respective connectors on the backplane and tighten them securely.
  • Reconnect the Ethernet cable to the ACLA, fiber-optic cables to the EISB, and the fan power plugs.
  • Close the door of the exciter control cabinet.
