FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:

IS230STAI2ASRTD2AG01 is a Simplex Analog I/O Terminal Board manufactured and designed by General Electric as part of the Mark VIe Series used in GE Distributed Control Systems. The STAI board is a compact analog input terminal board designed for process control applications, supporting 10 analog input channels and two analog output channels. It accommodates various transmitter configurations, including two-wire, three-wire, four-wire, and externally powered transmitters, providing flexibility for diverse industrial environments. The analog outputs operate in the 020 mA range, with one channel configurable to 0200 mA via a jumper, making it suitable for specialized applications.

The board uses high-density Euro-block terminal blocks for secure connections and includes an on-board ID chip that allows the system to identify the board for diagnostics and monitoring. The STAI board is available in a simplex configuration only, offering a streamlined solution for single-channel systems. Integration with the PAIC I/O pack ensures seamless communication with the system controller over Ethernet, delivering high-speed and reliable data transfer. The PAIC I/O pack connects to the STAI board via a D-type connector, creating a robust physical interface for efficient signal exchange. Designed for simplex systems, this combination of the STAI board and PAIC pack provides a high-density, cost-effective, and flexible analog I/O solution for process automation.

INSTALLATION:

The STAI is mounted on a sheet metal carrier, which is mounted on a DIN rail, together with a plastic insulator. The STAI plus insulator may also be mounted on a sheet metal assembly and then fastened directly to a cabinet. Euro-block terminal blocks come in the following two varieties:

  • A permanently mounted terminal block with 48 terminals is present on STAI 1.
  • STAI 2 features a right-angle header that can be plugged into a variety of pluggable terminal blocks that are readily accessible and have a total of 48 terminals.

The following types of analog inputs and outputs can be accommodated:

  • Analog input, two-wire transmitter
  • Analog input, three-wire transmitter
  • Analog input, four-wire transmitter
  • Analog input, externally powered transmitter
  • Analog input, voltage 5 V, 10 V dc
  • Analog output, 0-20 mA current
  • Analog output, 0-200 mA current

OPERATION:

The STAI terminal board provides 24 V DC power directly on the board to supply all connected transmitters (or transducers), eliminating the need for external power sources and simplifying field wiring. It offers flexibility for signal acquisition by allowing users to select between current or voltage inputs through easily configurable jumpers. This makes the board adaptable to various instrumentation requirements commonly found in industrial automation environments.

For analog outputs, the board includes two output circuits: one fixed at 420 mA, while the second can be jumper-configured to operate either in the 420 mA range or the 0200 mA range, providing compatibility with a broader range of control devices. With a single cable connection to the PAIC I/O pack, the design ensures streamlined installation and reduced wiring complexity. However, this single-connection architecture means the STAI board is limited to simplex configurations only and cannot support Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) applications like the TBAI board, making it suitable for non-redundant system designs.

CONFIGURATION:

The STAI terminal board utilizes a jumper-based configuration system, allowing for a flexible setup to accommodate various application requirements. All configuration jumpers are clearly marked on the board, and their precise locations can be found in the installation diagram provided in the technical documentation. This design ensures ease of customization for both input and output signal types. For the analog inputs, configuration options include:

  • Jumpers J1A through J8A: Select between the current input and the voltage input for each of the eight primary input channels.
  • Jumpers J1B through J8B: Determine whether the input return is connected to common ground or left floating, allowing for different grounding schemes based on field requirements.
  • Jumpers J9A and J10A: Configure the current range for the remaining two input channels, selecting between 1 mA and 20 mA to suit low-level or standard current loop signals.
  • Jumpers J9B and J10B: Similar to the first eight channels, these jumpers define whether the return for these inputs is tied to common or isolated.
  • Jumper J0: Adjusts Output 1 to operate in either the 20 mA range or the 200 mA range, ensuring compatibility with high-current applications when required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is a Simplex Analog I/O Terminal Board?

A Simplex Analog I/O Terminal Board is a device designed to connect multiple analog inputs and outputs to a control system in a non-redundant (simplex) configuration. It is commonly used in industrial process automation for accurate signal acquisition and output control, where redundancy is not required.

How many inputs and outputs does it support?

The board supports 10 analog input channels and 2 analog output channels. Inputs can be configured for current or voltage signals, while outputs include one fixed at 420 mA and another configurable for 420 mA or 0200 mA.

How does the board communicate with the controller?

It interfaces with the PAIC I/O pack via a D-type connector, and communication to the controller occurs over Ethernet, ensuring reliable and high-speed data exchange.

How is the input type (current or voltage) selected?

Input type selection is done through jumpers J1AJ8A for the first eight channels, and J9AJ10A for the remaining two channels. This allows customization of each input channel according to the field device requirements.
