Functional Description

IS220STTCH2A is a simplex thermocouple terminal board developed by General Electric. The terminal Board represents a compact and highly versatile solution for connecting and managing thermocouple inputs in industrial applications. Designed for easy installation, whether on DIN-rails or flat surfaces, this terminal board provides a seamless connection to the PTCC thermocouple processor board on the Mark VIe or the VTCC thermocouple processor board on the Mark VI.

Features

  • Compact and Mountable Design: The Terminal Board is engineered for compactness and flexibility. Its design allows it to be easily mounted on DIN-rails or flat surfaces, ensuring adaptability to various installation scenarios. This versatility is especially valuable in settings where space may be limited or unconventional.
  • Robust Thermocouple Input Management: With a capacity for 12 thermocouple inputs, the board can accommodate a significant number of temperature measurement points. This makes it suitable for applications where precision temperature monitoring is paramount, such as industrial processes and environmental control systems.
  • Seamless Integration with Processor Boards: The board is seamlessly integrated with either the PTCC thermocouple processor board in the Mark VIe or the VTCC thermocouple processor board in the Mark VI. This integration streamlines the connection of thermocouples to the processing unit, providing a cohesive and efficient system for temperature data acquisition and control.
  • On-Board Signal Conditioning and Cold Junction Reference: On-board signal conditioning and cold junction reference. These features are identical to those found on the larger TBTC board, ensuring the accurate and reliable measurement of temperature. Signal conditioning enhances the quality of the input signals, while the cold junction reference compensates for temperature differentials.
  • High-Density Euro-Block Terminal Blocks: The Terminal Board incorporates high-density Euro-Block type terminal blocks, offering a secure and efficient method for connecting thermocouples. These terminal blocks simplify the process of wiring and provide a durable and reliable connection, reducing the risk of signal loss or interference.
  • Board Identification for System Diagnostics: To enhance system diagnostics and troubleshooting, an on-board ID chip is integrated into the STTC. This chip enables the processor to identify and recognize the board, providing essential information for diagnostics and ensuring efficient maintenance and problem-solving procedures.

Installation

  1. Mounting the STTC and Insulator: The STTC Terminal Board and a plastic insulator are assembled on a sheet metal carrier, which, in turn, can be mounted on a DIN rail or directly onto a panel. The choice of mounting method will depend on your specific installation requirements and available space. If you opt for DIN rail mounting, secure the sheet metal carrier to the DIN rail using appropriate fasteners. Ensure that the assembly is stable and securely attached to the rail. If panel mounting is preferred, secure the sheet metal assembly directly to your panel using the provided mounting holes and bolts. Make sure the assembly is flush and secure against the panel's surface.
  2. Wiring Thermocouples: The next step involves wiring the thermocouples to the Board. Use typical #18 AWG wires to connect the thermocouples to the Euro-Block type terminal block on the Terminal Board. Ensure that the wiring is well organized and routed neatly to prevent signal interference and to maintain a tidy installation.
  3. Euro-Block Terminal Block: The Euro-Block type terminal block on the Board is a pivotal component for making secure and reliable connections. This terminal block provides 42 terminals that can be utilized for wiring thermocouples. These terminals can be fixed or removable, offering flexibility in your installation approach. Use these terminals to establish connections with the thermocouples while following proper wiring practices.
  4. Secure Connections: Double-check all connections to ensure they are securely fastened. Properly tightened connections are crucial to prevent any signal loss or disruptions in temperature monitoring. Verify that the thermocouples are securely attached to the terminal block to maintain stable temperature measurements.
  5. Testing and Verification: Once the board is installed and the thermocouples are wired, it's advisable to conduct a thorough testing and verification process. Ensure that all connections are functioning as intended and that temperature readings are accurate. This step is essential to confirm the successful installation and functionality of the system.

Operation

  • The connection to the I/O pack or board containing the A/D converter is illustrated in the diagram below. The I/O pack or board serves to supply excitation for the cold junction (CJ) reference on the terminal board. Connector JA1 facilitates the transmission of the 12 thermocouple signals, along with the CJ signal, and the connection to the identity chip (ID).
  • This setup ensures seamless communication and accurate signal transmission between the STTC and the A/D converter, enabling precise temperature measurements and reliable performance in various industrial applications.
