Functional Description

IS420PPNGH1A is a PROFINET Gateway Module designed and developed by GE. It is a part of GE Mark VIe control system. It routes I/O from PROFINET Slave devices to the IONet's Mark VIe controller. The board connects the Mark VIe controller to a high-speed PROFINET LAN, allowing it to communicate with PROFINET I/O devices. The PPNG provides the functions, services, and protocols required for PROFINET RT Version 2.2 I/O controller certification, with 100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces. PPNG, in conjunction with the ToolboxST application, functions as an I/O pack, allowing the addition of PROFINET I/O devices and smart sensors to a typical Mark VIe control system architecture.

Dataflow between PPNG and Mark VIe Controller

  • There are two types of dataflow between the PPNG and the controller: fixed I/O and PROFINET I/O. The fixed I/O includes the inputs shared by all I/O packs, such as L3DIAG and IOPackTmpr, but no outputs.
  • The PPNG firmware pre-defines the set of fixed I/O. PROFINET I/O is defined as data exchanged with PROFINET slave devices and varies depending on the hardware configuration specified by the application. At standard controller frame rates, the PPNG exchanges data with the Mark VIe controller (10 ms, 20 ms, 40 ms and so forth).
  • The actual PROFINET data size is determined by the data sent by PROFINET I/O devices.
  • The PPNG firmware limits this to 8 KB of data in either direction. The ToolboxST application includes rules for determining the maximum allowable amount of PROFINET data in terms of Ethernet packets.
