FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:
ICC3600A1A is a Ground Fault Detection Module manufactured and designed by General Electric and is part of the Mark II Series used in Static Starter Control systems. The GFD module is designed to monitor and detect ground fault conditions on two independent power or data circuits. For accurate operation, each circuit must be electrically balanced concerning ground. The module continuously checks the resistance between the monitored conductors and the earth ground. If the resistance falls below 10 K Ohms, it identifies this as a ground fault condition. Two LEDs on the module provide a clear visual indication of which conductor has the fault. The module includes a normally energized Trouble/Ground Fault relay with both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts to facilitate integration with monitoring systems. This relay supports two selectable operating modes, which can be configured via jumper settings.
APPLICATION OF GROUND FAULT DETECTOR:
The GFD (Ground Fault Detector) module is specifically designed for use with short-haul modems and other power-limited circuits where detection of ground faults on conductors is essential. It provides continuous supervision of the electrical integrity of these circuits, helping to identify unwanted connections between the monitored conductors and the earth ground. This is especially important in communication and control systems where ground faults can cause communication errors, equipment malfunction, or pose safety hazards.
One of the key advantages of the GFD module is its compatibility with Signature Series input modules. When configured in Mode 1, the module enables the control panel to receive separate and distinct signals for both ground fault and module trouble conditions. This is achieved by placing a ground fault on the relay’s common terminal, allowing systems that support advanced diagnostics, such as Signature Series modules, to differentiate between a ground fault on the line and an internal issue within the GFD module itself. This distinction improves response time and diagnostic accuracy during maintenance or fault conditions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is the operating voltage of the Ground Fault Detection Module?
The Ground Fault Detection Module operates on a 24 VDC power supply, making it compatible with most industrial control systems, including turbine control and other low-voltage circuit systems.
What is the ground fault detection threshold?
The module detects ground faults when the resistance between the monitored conductors and earth ground falls below 10 K Ohms. This threshold ensures early detection of potential issues, minimizing operational disruptions.
How does the module communicate fault information to a control system?
The module uses the Trouble/Ground Fault relay to signal fault information. This relay is equipped with NO and NC contacts that allow it to interface with external monitoring and control systems. The ground fault condition is communicated through the relay, enabling real-time monitoring and response.
