Functional Description

DS3820DMVB is a Discrete Input Module developed by GE. It is a part of Mark IV control system. Designed to process 125VDC discrete inputs from external devices and field sensors. It enables the control system to monitor, respond, and protect vital turbine operations with speed and reliability.

System Features

  • The Mark IV control system is architecturally divided into four main sections to ensure reliability, redundancy, and fault tolerance. The first three sections are known as R, S, and T, collectively referred to as RST. These three sections are functionally identical, yet completely independent processors. Each of them operates autonomously, equipped with its own dedicated inputs, outputs, and power supply. This design ensures that a failure in one section does not compromise the function of the others, providing a high degree of operational reliability.
  • The fourth section, referred to as C, stands for Communicator. This section plays a critical role in coordinating the activities of the system. It is connected to the R, S, and T sections via six independent communication lines, allowing for the secure exchange of data. The use of these independent communication paths helps to isolate failures, ensuring that a malfunction or energetic fault in one control processor (R, S, or T) is less likely to impact the others. This strategic separation enhances the system’s overall fault tolerance and minimizes the risk of cascading failures.
  • In addition to internal coordination, the C section also manages operator interface functions. It facilitates interaction through membrane switches and a CRT display, enabling monitoring and manual control. Furthermore, in applications where remote control or supervisory functions are required, the C section serves as the communication bridge between the Mark IV system and remote computers, making it a central hub for both local and remote operational oversight.
