Functional Description
IC697BEM731 is a Genius Bus Controller Module developed by GE. It is a part of Fanuc for the 90-70 Series PLC systems. It is designed for compatibility with the Genius I/O handheld monitors IC660/IC661, this module plays role in managing and facilitating communication between I/O devices and the PLC CPU. The Module provides an interface that allows I/O blocks to communicate asynchronously with the PLC, ensuring that data is transferred reliably between the various components of the control system.
Features
- High-Capacity Communication: Supports up to thirty drops per channel, allowing for scalable installations where multiple I/O devices can be connected efficiently through the IC66 I/O system. This makes it suitable for complex industrial setups requiring extensive data exchange.
- Advanced I/O Diagnostics: Seamless integration with IC660 and IC661 I/O diagnostics tools provides real-time system status and fault detection, helping maintenance teams quickly identify and resolve issues, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
- Redundancy for Increased Reliability: The module is designed to support redundant blocks, cables, and CPUs, making it ideal for applications where high uptime and fault tolerance are critical. This redundancy minimizes system failures and ensures continuous operation even in case of hardware issues.
- Global Communication Capabilities: With IC66 LAN communication support, allows data to be shared between multiple PLCs and host systems, enhancing network efficiency and interoperability in large-scale industrial automation networks.
- Handheld Monitor Port for Easy Troubleshooting: A dedicated Handheld Monitor Port simplifies system diagnostics by enabling quick access for troubleshooting and monitoring, reducing system downtime and improving overall maintenance efficiency.
- Soft Configuration via CPU: The soft configuration capability allows users to set up and modify the module directly through the PLC CPU, eliminating the need for manual configuration and making the setup process more efficient and user-friendly.
- PLC Alarm Processor Functionality: The module features a PLC Alarm Processor function, ensuring that faults are logged, timestamped, and queued for effective troubleshooting and fault management. This enhances system reliability by providing a structured approach to fault diagnosis and resolution.
- Efficient Data Transfer: Performs asynchronous scanning of IC66 input and output blocks, ensuring that I/O data is transferred to the CPU once per scan over the black plane of the IC697 PLC rack. Additionally, it supports directed communications initiated by a PLC CPU Communication Service Request and can be configured for global communications as needed.
- Flexible Configuration Options: The module can be configured using MS-DOS or Windows programming software, making it adaptable to different industrial environments and simplifying integration into existing automation systems.
Functions
- It serves as a single-channel bus controller. It is responsible for scanning and managing I/O data asynchronously, transferring it to the PLC CPU once per scan over the backplane of the IC697 PLC rack. This asynchronous data transfer helps to reduce delays and ensures that the CPU always has up-to-date I/O information.
- The bus controller can also handle directed communications, initiated by a PLC CPU Communication Service Request. Additionally, it can be configured to perform global communications across a network of PLCs. This functionality is essential for systems that require the sharing of data between different PLCs or with host computers, as it allows for the transfer of global data across multiple CPUs automatically and repetitively.
- The PLC Alarm Processor function also plays a key role in the operation. It handles faults reported by the bus controller, timestamping and queuing them in a fault table for later analysis. This feature ensures that any issues can be promptly identified and addressed, maintaining the health of the system.
Installation Procedure
- Ensure Power Is Off: Before installing, ensure that the rack power is off to avoid any electrical hazards or damage to the module during installation.
- Install in Rack: Install the module into the appropriate slot within the PLC rack. Proper placement within the rack ensures proper communication between the module and the rest of the control system.
- Power On: After installation, turn the power back on. The module will begin its power-up sequence. The top LED will blink for approximately 5 seconds during diagnostics.
- When the diagnostics are complete, the LED will remain lit, signaling that the module is operational.
- LED Indicators:
- Middle LED: This LED lights up when a valid configuration has been received from the CPU, confirming that the I/O bus operation has been verified.
- Bottom LED: This LED remains OFF under all conditions and does not indicate any active status.
Removing the Module
- Grasp the Board Firmly: Hold the module firmly at the top and bottom of the board cover. Use your thumbs to press on the front of the cover and your fingers on the plastic clips at the back.
- Disengage Rack Clips: Squeeze the rack clips to disengage them from the rail. This action will loosen the board and allow you to remove it from the backplane connector.
- Slide and Remove: Slide the board along the card guide and remove it completely from the rack, ensuring no damage to the connectors or the module itself.
Configuration Settings
Upon power-up, the module has no predefined baud rate or serial bus address. These parameters are set by the MS-DOS or Windows programming software configurator. By default, the baud rate is set to 153.6K baud, supporting IC66 I/O buses up to 2000 feet in length. The serial bus address is typically set to 31. Once a valid configuration is stored, the PLC CPU will transfer the baud rate and bus address settings to the module, ensuring consistent configuration each time the module is powered on.
