- Voltage ranges: Two voltage input ranges are available, 0V to 10V and ±10V, providing the flexibility to work with various voltage-based devices.
- Independent channel configuration: Both channels can be configured independently, allowing for greater customization and optimization based on the application requirements.
- Two formats for representation of measured values: The ALG220 module offers the ability to represent the measured values in two different formats, enhancing the ease of interpretation.
- Resolution independence: The module’s resolution remains independent of the representation format and measuring range, ensuring consistency in measurement accuracy.
- Fast process data update: The process data update for both channels occurs in 1.5 milliseconds, ensuring real-time response and system efficiency.
- Diagnostic indicators: Built-in diagnostic indicators enable easy troubleshooting and status monitoring of the system.
Installation Instructions
To ensure optimal performance and prevent overheating, it is recommended that a separate main circuit be used for the analog modules to keep the current flowing through the power buses to a minimum. If the analog modules must share a main circuit with other modules, it is advised to position the analog modules to the right of the standard modules, at the end of the main circuit, to minimize interference.
Connections
For the module, it is important to use shielded, twisted-pair cables to connect sensors. The shielding should be connected to the shield connector clamp, which provides a secure and effective connection to the FE GND of the module. This shielding helps prevent electrical noise and interference, ensuring signal integrity. When connecting the module, voltages above ±5V should not be applied to current inputs, as this can damage the module's electronics by exceeding the maximum current capacity of ±100mA. To ensure proper connection and signal protection, always use connectors that provide a shield connection when installing sensors.
Output Data Words for Channel Configuration
The VersaPoint Analog Input module is designed to receive two output data words which are essential for configuring the module to suit specific application needs. These output data words allow users to customize the configuration for each channel, or they can choose to use the module's default configuration without making any changes. The configuration setting is temporary, meaning it is not saved in the module's memory. As a result, it must be transmitted during each logic scan to ensure the module operates according to the specified settings.
Default Channel Configuration
Upon initial power-up or when using the default settings, the module is configured as follows:
- Measuring Range: The input signal is set to a 0 to 10 V range, which is standard for many common analog sensors and devices.
- Averaging: The averaging feature is enabled by default with a 16-fold averaging. This feature helps to reduce noise in the measured signal by taking the average of 16 readings, which provides more stable and reliable data.
- Output Format: The module’s output format is Signed 15-bit, which ensures that the data is processed in a way that accommodates both positive and negative values, depending on the configuration.
Configurable Parameters
In addition to the default settings, users have the flexibility to configure the following parameters for each channel:
- Measuring Range: Users can select a specific measuring range for the input signal based on the application needs. The module can handle both voltage and current signals, and the selection is determined by the physical wire connection to the input terminals of the module.
- Averaging: The averaging function can be toggled on or off. When enabled, it smoothens out fluctuating readings by averaging the input signal over a defined number of samples, improving the overall measurement quality.
- Input Data Format: The format in which the input data is represented can also be adjusted to suit specific requirements. This flexibility is particularly useful when integrating the module into larger systems that require data to be in a specific format for further processing.
Power-Up Behavior and Error Handling
- Upon power-up, the module will initially display a message indicating that the measured value is invalid (error code 8004 hex) in the input data. This is a standard behavior to ensure that the module is properly initialized.
- Within 1 second (maximum), the module will accept the preset configuration and the first valid measured value will be available for use. This ensures that the system remains stable and operational right from the start.
Changing Channel Configuration
- If the channel configuration is modified after power-up, the new configuration will take effect immediately for the corresponding channel. However, it is important to note that such changes will only persist during the current logic scan. If the system undergoes a reset or power cycle, the configuration will revert to the default settings unless new configuration data is provided in the next logic scan.
- This flexibility in channel configuration, combined with the ease of implementation and customization, makes the module a highly adaptable solution for various industrial analog input applications.
Environmental and Installation Requirements
- Operates within a temperature range of -25oC to 55oC and can be stored between -25oC and 85oC.
- The module requires a humidity level averaging 75% and must not exceed 85%. It has an IP 20 rating according to IEC 60529, providing protection against dust and direct contact. The module is also classified under Class 3 protection according to VDE 0106 and IEC 60536 standards.
System Integration and Diagnostics
- The module is equipped with a Bus Diagnostics LED indicator for easy status monitoring and troubleshooting. It is part of the remote cabinet set, and other specialty modules for RTD and Thermocouple inputs are available to meet different application needs. The’s integration into the VersaPoint system provides robust and reliable performance, making it an essential component in various industrial automation setups.
